Stormy nights and tournaments

Image
Its not often in cornwall we get to see a decent run of thunder and lightning, but a few weeks ago we had quite a show, up close. Was great until phone line was hit! So now no landline... in your own time BT. But at least i got a few pictures!   Anyway, back on topic. A week before the storm we a local SAGA tourney (8 players), it was good fun and i got to try out the welsh... more on that a lot later. But for now i have my first game report up against the vikings. Click here for report  Lastly yesterday i took part in a tournament for X-Wing down in St Austell at "Mad for Miniatures". Last time i was there i won a punisher with my Scum, so i'd thought id fly it and see what it does... not a lot it seems. I finished the evening with 1 win and a loss. But it was nice to fly imperials for a change. The winner was flying two Jumpmasters and a Hawk.  Still i got my purple imperials painted.. Personal fleet of Governor T'Ruk Th tactici...

Rohan recruits...

Image
So on the work bench i have been slowly adding to my Lord of the Rings. Have just finished Eomer...had the model for years but never fancied tackling the leather detail over armour. But i am happy with the result.   Also i have a new SAGA force on its way, which means i am selling off some to make room. So for now, my Crusaders / Normans are moving on, while i prepare to learn a new battle board!  Also gives my group a chance to relax from the knight smash for a while.  Dha weles!

Buildings, Games and oh, I am a wargamer!

Image
Okay, so continuing on with my Empire, i thought i'd go old school and make some building from cereal box card.. i was happy with the result, so i made a video on what i created. The buuildings design is basic enough that i could use it from the medieval period to probably ww2, plus wouldn't be out of place in Bree! Click here for tutorial  My Bretons are out again, hampering the Anglo-danes who decided to pick a fight. This time i squabble over a couple of bridges. Click here for report    Finallt i was nominate by Jack Sarge  for an "I am a Wargamer" video. So i filled in the challenge and completed it. The only thing i didn't do was decide on my third nominee. I though i would give the viewers a chance to put forward a wargaming channel for me to nominate. This way i get to pick through some channels, hopefully some of which i haven't come a across before. Click here for "I am a wargamer" so, see you next time... Dha weles...

Couple of battles and some WIP's

Image
Well i'm slowly catching up with my reports: Age of the Wolf    My Bretons charge up north and take on the Scots in the challenge. Click here for Report Battle Companies   My poor Rohan don't seem to be raising through the ranks very quickly. But at least I outnumber some Wood Eves 2-1, so this should give me a chance for some good results. Click here for BC report Other bits   Currently working on my sci-fi rule set, which is becoming a bit more organised.Had another run through the game, and still enjoying the brutal system... oh yes your troops drop quick.   A team advances through the debris in search of resources Models by Copplestone Castings    Finally some Empire are getting painted for my narrated campaign. I was going to use my own system but thinking about it, it may be a good way to show some War and Sorcery (fantasy War and Conquest). Altdorf handgunners. Decided on round...

Some X-wing, SAGA and Lord of the Rings!

Image
I have finally got up the 3rd and final game from the PAW'16 Tournament. Click here for X-Wing Report   The tournament was well run and a great fun. This game does seem to work well for tournaments and i am looking forward to the next one. Till then i have somehow managed 2 tops out of 2 tournaments, So onward and upward! PAW'16  X-wing tourney First and Second. The chap next to me was standing on a box...honest!  I have also got a fun little game of SAGA in, using a scenario published in Wargames Illustrated. The scenario is a challenge for the Attacker, but its fun to play. Many thanks to my opponent, who made a cracking stockade. Click here for SAGA Battle Report   Finally, i have got back into playing Lord of the Rings. I really like this system but haven't played it in an age. So when a friend wanted to catch up for a 500pts game i mustered some elves. I think there may be new life brought back into that game system and ...

How 2 Play SAGA part 2

Image
.. So i have finally got round to getting the H2P: SAGA finished. Unfortunately my computer had decided to change a whole bunch of recording settings, so i have spent most of my time trying to get those small items, like a mic, working. Hopefully now things can get back to normal a bit.  I have several battle reports to put up, and the 3rd and final part of H2P: SAGA. Then i will probably create an X-wing one, as i am really enjoying the game at the moment, as well as being excited for the new movies. Which is also leading into another small project for some SW ground battles, but we shall see how well that progresses.  So to part 2: Please be aware these tutorial vids are slow and not worth watching if you are already understanding of the rules. They are designed for the novice: Click here for Part 2: H2P SAGA

Frostgrave Terrain..

Image
Been slow of late to keep up with some Batreps, but my time has been put in making terrain for Frostgrave.  To start with i have a SAGA battle report. Here my Crusaders take on some Moors, who seem to be bringing loads of Naphtha Throwers, it was quite an experience! Click here for Battle Report My opponents Camelry.. looking great!    With the Frostgrave terrain, i needed to create something quickly. As such i based most of it on old terrain i had. Then simply re-vamped and based it. All was done using basic methods and materials. Also i got round to making some magic walls, as i have a feeling that the spell is going to be quite popular.   These walls are designed for the spell and are simply made of foamboard.   These were made using the old plastic 40k ruins. It was mounted on a 9mm MDF base. Rubble was made from balsa wood and chunks of foamboard, while the flagstones are simply packing card cut to random sizes. The tree is ...

Battles 1066 Part 1

Image
Well we finally started getting our 1066 games in, though we only got our first game in: The Battle of Stamford Bridge. Click here for Battle Report.   We mange to play this 3 vs 3 game in 5 hours, though we took our time and had a great relaxed game, with a lot of laughs and tea. The game itself wasn't tested prior, so it was lucky it all worked out well, and turned out to be a fun and challenging scenario.   Now i can concentrate on my tutorials, as well as starting up "Frostgrave" Final thoughts.. recently it had been my birthday and had to share a picture of the cake my family made for me.. awesome. "Ewoks!"

Practice for hastings

Image
Well, October is nearly upon us and i have to prepare for the event. It should be a good day, with two games being played, in 4vs4 battles. With that in mind, i thought it may be prudent to start to learn the Viking and Norman battle board.   So here is my latest report in trying to learn the Viking way! Click here for Batrep. My opponents Anglo-Danes, forming a proper shieldwall.

Siege cover

Image
So the SAGA rules i have been working on seem to be fun, as we attempt a "Battle of Barons". The game has two players on either side each with a walled keep. I have a small overview at the beginning of my latest battle report. Click here for report

Basic siege towers

Image
So with some siege towers constructed i thought i'd do a little tutorial. Click here for vid.     They're pretty simple i know, but also pretty cheap to cobble together, but still look the part on the battlefield. Still, need some more ladders though, so enough to keep me busy till sunday.

How to play SAGA

Image
I am starting a small run of video's on how to play SAGA, with a hopeful follow up taking a closer look at each Factions that i play. This first video is all about building a warband: Click here for Video   Other than that i have been scribbling to create some siege rules for SAGA. I really enjoyed the siege game we played, but i'd like to make it a little easier for the defenders, and also introduce siege engines. Next week we have a big game of SAGA planned on a 6'x7' board, including 3 villages and two fortresses... should be fun. Currently trying to make some siege towers and ladders.   Finally have been taken by the Soda Pop Miniatures: Super Dungeon Explorer. I hadn't really been initially interested as i have "Descent" which is a great dungeon crawler, even though you have to plan a weekend around a single scenario!   What got my attention was the Player vs Player arena, as it seemed fun and quick, though we did decide to remove t...

Current projects

Image
So i have held true and finally finished a unit of mounted Hearthguard. Nice and pleased with the results.  The miniatures are from Crusader Miniatures. Also with seasons Bolt Action league, i'm trying to get into painting drab germans :D, least the method was quick and they don't look too bad either. I have 3 of these squads in 1000pts each with a LMG, Asault rifle and an NCO with Sub-machine gun. These are the plastics from warlord games.
